The iPhone 15 P. and P. Max introduce a titanium frame, replacing the stainless steel of previous models. This aerospace-grade titanium is lighter, tougher, and corrosion-resistant, giving the phones a matte finish that improves grip and reduces weight. The iPhone 15 Pro Max is 20 grams lighter than the 14 P. Max, and the new rounded chambers make it feel thinner and more comfortable in hand. However, the switch to aluminum for the internal chassis raises durability concerns, as drop tests show the back glass is more prone to breaking.

The design closely resembles the iPhone 14/15 Plus, which may disappoint some fans who expect a more premium feel from the Pro models. The Dynamic Island cutout and triple lens setup remain, with the Pro Max featuring a 48MP main camera, 12MP ultrawide, and 12MP 5x telephoto lens. While the screen is top-notch with excellent color, contrast, and brightness, the lack of Touch ID continues, relying on Face ID instead.

A new Action button replaces the Mute switch, offering customizable functions like cam shortcuts and voice memos. MagSafe compatibility remains, with strong magnets for accessories and charging.

In summary, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is lighter, easier to repair, and features a grippier frame, but its fragile back glass and similar design to non-Pro models may leave some feeling underwhelmed. Despite its flaws, the attention to detail makes it a solid device, earning an A- for design.

Software and Connectivity

iOS 17 was pre-installed on every new iPhone. This update, while marketed by Apple, was one of the least significant changes to iOS. It introduced features like Standby mode, customizable Contact Posters, Password sharing, offline Maps, updated Messages with automatic SMS code deletion, and interactive widgets. The iOS 17 interface remained familiar, with homescreens filled with apps and widgets, the App Library, and Notification and Control Centers.

The lockscreen continued to house notifications and shortcuts for the torch and camera, with an Always-on option available on the iPhone 14 Pro and newer models. iOS 17 also introduced a Standby mode, which activated during charging in landscape orientation, showing a larger clock and calendar, plus notifications. The Night version of this feature offered red colors for low-light use.

Face ID and PIN were still the primary methods of secure unlock, and the lockscreen customization allowed users to pick cool wallpapers, add up to four widgets, and create multiple lockscreen setups that could be switched on the go. The new Action key replaced the old Mute switch, offering various shortcuts, such as silencing, activating the torch, or launching the lens.

On the homescreen, apps and widgets could be arranged as usual, with two dedicated screens: the Today page and the App Library. The App Library automatically sorted apps, while widgets came in three sizes and were now interactive, allowing users to perform actions directly from the widget without opening the app.

The Dynamic Island, introduced in previous models, remained a multitasking feature with various modes. It displayed system alerts, music, and call info, while expanding into a longer pill shape for more detailed notifications. The animations were smooth, but some users found the gestures around the island less intuitive.

FaceTime gained new functionality with audio and video messages for missed calls, while Messages added the Check In feature, which notified family members of safe arrivals. Live Voicemail allowed users to see transcriptions of incoming calls in real time, deciding whether to answer. Additionally, the new customizable Contact Posters enabled personalization of call screens, and NameDrop allowed easy contact sharing between iPhones and Apple Watches.

Photos, Music, TV, and Safari apps received minor updates, but the LiDAR scanner, included in the latest Pro models, continued to offer precise AR capabilities and distance measurement. Emergency SOS via satellite was now available in multiple countries, with an additional Vehicle emergency service. Users also enjoyed two years of free satellite services.

The new USB-C port on the iPhone 15 Pro models supported up to 10Gbps transfer speeds, a significant upgrade over the standard iPhone 15's 480Mbps. Video output was supported via DisplayPort Alt mode, allowing simple screen mirroring, though some apps like YouTube struggled with inconsistent display behavior. The USB-C connection also supported peripherals like keyboards, mice, external storage, and game controllers.

In summary, while iOS 17 and the new features were welcome, they weren't groundbreaking. The update focused more on minor tweaks and convenience improvements rather than revolutionary changes.

Camera

The iPhone 15 Pro Max comes equipped with a total of four cams—three on the rear and one on the front. Each of these cams is supported by a LiDAR system for the rear and a 3D ToF cam for the front. The back cameras, except for the selfie cam, have seen some updates, although these might not be immediately apparent from just looking at the specifications.

Starting with the main rear cam, the iPhone 15 Pro Max features a 48MP sensor with 1.22µm pixels and second-generation sensor-shift stabilization. The focal length is equivalent to 24mm, with an aperture of f/1.78. While these numbers seem unchanged, Apple has introduced new imaging features, including the ability to capture 48MP HEIF/JPG images alongside 48MP ProRAW, and digital zoom modes equivalent to 28mm and 35mm. Users can even set these focal lengths as their default settings.

A major addition is the new 5x telephoto camera with a periscope design. Thanks to the folded optical structure, this cam can zoom to 5x (120mm equivalent). Apple calls this optical setup a tetraprism, and it reflects light across four elements before hitting the sensor. The lens has an f/2.8 aperture and includes optical stabilization with both the lens and sensor moving to counteract shake.

The ultrawide camera remains the same as last year's version, featuring a 1/2.55" sensor with 1.4µm pixel pitch and 100% focus pixels, paired with a 13mm f/2.2 lens. It supports macro photography and has a new anti-reflective coating, improved HDR, and better Night Mode. The selfie cam is a 12MP sensor with a bright f/1.9 aperture and autofocus, a rare feature for a selfie cam.

Apple's cam app includes some new features. You can now capture portrait mode photos after taking a shot, using depth maps automatically captured during the initial photo. You can also toggle between focal lengths in the viewfinder, zooming to 28mm (1.2x) or 35mm (1.5x), and the app allows toggling of other settings like flash, exposure compensation, and filters.

When it comes to photo quality, the iPhone 15 Max's main camera defaults to 24MP but can shoot in 12MP or 48MP as well. The 24MP images offer great detail and accurate colors, though moving objects may lack extra detail due to the limitations of supersampling. Apple’s color rendition is highly accurate, though it can appear slightly muted, but the Photographic Styles feature lets users adjust color saturation to their preference.

The 5x telephoto cam captures highly detailed photos with low noise and great sharpness. The ultrawide lens also delivers solid images with good corner sharpness, though high-frequency details may look smeared. The ultrawide camera also doubles as a macro camera, capturing sharp and colorful close-ups. The 12MP selfie camera produces great results, although Apple’s sharpening can sometimes be too aggressive on facial features.

Portrait mode offers different zoom options—2x, 1x, and 5x—with the 5x portraits being particularly impressive, offering excellent subject separation and background blur. In low-light conditions, Night Mode automatically kicks in, and it can be adjusted or disabled. Night photos are saved in 12MP resolution and offer great detail, sharpness, and realistic color reproduction

Video Recording

The iPhone 15 Pro Max supports video recording up to 4K60 across all four cameras, with a 4K24 option for a cinematic look. Apple’s class-leading stabilization, called Cinematic Stabilization (with Enhanced Stabilization on by default), is available on all video modes. Slow-motion videos can be captured at 1080p at 240fps.

The Action Mode, using the ultrawide camera at 60fps, heavily crops 4K footage to 2.8K but delivers incredibly stable video. It works on all rear cameras and resolutions, though the ultrawide lens is the primary for 2.8K@60fps.

Cinematic Mode allows 4K@30fps recording with a depth-of-field effect, automatically adjusting focus when the subject changes. ProRes is available at 4K60 if stored on an external USB 3 drive. There's support for Log encoding and an upcoming option for Spatial Video, allowing playback in 3D on Apple Vision Pro. HDR video can be captured in Dolby Vision up to 4K60, which is viewable normally on non-HDR screens but enhanced on Dolby Vision devices. Users can choose between H.265 HEVC (mandatory for 4K60 and HDR) and H.264 encoders, with wide stereo audio recorded at 192kbps.

Daylight video quality is superb across all resolutions and cameras, offering excellent detail, sharpness, color accuracy, dynamic range, and natural processing. The 2x zoom and ultrawide footage maintain great sharpness, while the 5x telephoto and selfie videos, although slightly lower in quality, still perform well.

Low-light video quality remains strong, especially on the primary camera, with good detail, low noise, sharpness, and realistic dynamic range. The 2x zoomed videos are softer with more noise, but still usable. The 5x zoom struggles in low light as it often crops from the main camera, resulting in softer footage. The ultrawide performs surprisingly well, with good detail, sharpness, and color saturation.

Stabilization is top-notch on all cameras, making the footage smooth, even when moving, though the 5x telephoto is better suited for panning rather than walking shots.

Conclusion

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is undoubtedly among the best iPhone's, Apple has ever made. It features a new chip, updated connectivity port, a 5x zoom camera, and a titanium body that's both lighter and tougher. However, it retains many familiar elements like the display, speakers, battery, selfie camera, and iOS, which have already hit their peak, leading to more subtle improvements rather than big leaps.

For those looking to save, the iPhone 14 Max is now more affordable. While it lacks the 5x zoom and hardware raytracing, these features won’t matter to most users. Plus, the 14 Max even feels more premium in design. If the Max is too large, the regular iPhone 15 offers a similar experience in a smaller size but with a 3x zoom camera.

Outside of Apple's ecosystem, alternatives like the Galaxy Z Fold5 (for power users) and Z Flip5 (for compact use) are strong options in the foldable smartphone market.
